There is a significant difference between mainstream support, which ends
10/9/2018, and extended support.

In addition, there are numerous security and functionality improvements in
the latest version, MS Server 2019. It is currently available in preview
version:

If the OP is seriously considering using his server for the long haul, I see
no reason to handicap themselves with an outdated version. Of course, if this
is just something for their own home amusement, then it doesn't make any
difference. I believe that I can say with confidence that forward looking
developers are not going to be spending a great deal of effort or time in
back porting their applications to work on a twice superseded server version.

Just my 2¢.
