Yes, of course it is.

You might also wonder why it isn't common for people to do that on
your operating system. You didn't yet tell us what that is, but the
previous post that you wrote to this list gave some clues.

Typical numbers from a more-or-less random mailserver log trawl here:

761 messages rejected from spambots found by DNS lookup
13 messages rejected by Sanesecurity signatures *
0 messages rejected by ClamAV signatures

* 1 Windows malware (of no concern to a Linux user) and 12 junk mail.

The risk to any reasonably well-administered Linux system from email
borne malware is minimal. There is a much bigger risk, for example,
from 'drive-by' uploads to your system by means of the browser, and
more especially from badly secured and/or configured services which
you might ill-advisedly decide to install. You didn't mention them,
but I'll be mildly surprised if you haven't already done something.
Stay away from content management systems, for example, until you've
cut your teeth on the security basics.

On top of that, ClamAV's stock configuration (i.e. 'official' databases
only) typically finds less than 1% of the malware that for example the
Sanesecurity signatures find - at least that's my experience after two
decades of running mail servers.

If, instead of doing your homework, you try to solve problems that you
probably don't have then you'll be (1) working on protecting against a
ridiculously small fraction of the threats to your systems, and thus
(2) playing into the hands of the criminals; (3) you'll be wasting
your time, and incidentally (4) wasting the time of a lot of other
people by posting on mailing lists - which compounds (2).

In view of private messages that I've rejected, I should add that this
post isn't written just for you and isn't meant to be an admonishment.
It's just the way things are. Although I admit that there are times
when I despair of people deciding on the solution before they've spent
any time at all figuring out what the problem might be.

Are you using a 'home' ADSL router or some similar junk?
