There are not and have never been guarantees that any particular Linux
distribution would always have the newest version of a particular package. You
need to be prepared to deal with Linux issues personally. Some vendors have
stopped supporting the version of PHP that is standard in Centos 6, for example,
and there's no information as to if or when Centos might provide an RPM update
to the current release of PHP or even make the version that is in Centos 7
available to Centos 6. Sometimes you just have to build from source.

And I am guessing my Linux distro will not just seamlessly move on to 0.99 by itself with

Generally this means that we just won't regression test signatures against that
version anymore.

Can you be a little more specific about the manner in which this will take
place? Does it just mean no support or do you plan to poison pill the database
so the engine will no longer function, as has happened in the past.

One step needs to be to EOL 0.97.x releases (as we should have done when we
released 0.99, as per our EOL plan). As those older versions don't accept
certain types of signatures.
