Here is a cronjob I put in to remove the mirrors.dat
# remove "mirrors.dat" so Freshclam will use local mirror
3 0 * * * rm -f /var/clamav/mirrors.dat
I had this problem and have used a brute force solution to remove the
mirrors.dat file every day so it'll ignore previous problems (like the
machine being unavailable or other such issues)
