here i use freshclam with squid cache, if i need more then one local
clamd, proxy in freshclam is fully transperant

I agree with the squid cache use. I have it running but.... do not
benefit from it for ClamAV, at least not a lot, because I only have one
server at this time. But for other updates where several machines need
to get the same files, works great.
