Yes, I do generally use -a when listing.

Now I think we are getting somewhere.  There is, for instance INBOX and 
.INBOX.directory.  Possibly, in fact I think probably, earlier I was looking 
at the wrong one.  So - descend down the tree from there and all is well until 
I reach Newsletters, one of the two directories mention.  There, 

ls -al
total 24
drwx------.  2 anne anne  4096 Feb 18  2009 .
drwx------. 37 anne anne 12288 Sep  1 15:48 ..

No files are listed.  Similarly, at the level above, .INDEX.directory, it says

ls -al
total 18140

and goes on to list directories and index files, but no messages.  I know the 
messages are in ~/Maildir, so I'd really like to know what's going on here.  
OTOH, it's probably OT for this list, and I don't want to upset people by 
continuing with a thread they find irrelevant.
