When you get a "cannot run C++ compiled programs" from configure you
have to look into config.log and see the actual error from trying to
compile a test using g++ in this case (its not at the end of the file,
but near the end of the running configure part, then comes a report of
variables and settings).

There must be something, like an alias or an environment variable or a
part of the PATH, that is interfering.  The config.log has the details.
