Edwin, can this warning safely be ignored, or should we look at
modifying this value, even on non-FreeBSD systems?

Sorry to answer my own post.
I've gone ahead and added the following into my startup script:
ulimit -d 2000000
A ulimit -f 40000 follows.
Would this be the preferred method for many of those on the list to
handle these settings?
I googled the error and came up with the following:
ulimit -d 2097151 added just before clamd in the init script will
keep things just below the 2GB threshold
I just added it myself and got rid of the error onstartup.
