Hi Edwin, I discovered the cause after noticing that disabling of the freshclam and clamd daemons had no effect. I am running ISPConfig v2.3.0 (release date 2009-03-19) which did not contain a recent version of clamav (v0.88). I must have been unfortunate since a next release (2.2.31) apparently did include the clamav upgrade.
Things seem to be back to normal now (pointing ISPConfig to the regular daemons since the upgrade of that still failed :-( ). Thanks for your hints.
