Never had a problem myself; however, have you tried this:

        /usr/ports/sysutils/portdowngrade

By default, it is installed with the following credentials:

clamav:*:106:106::0:0:Clam Antivirus:/nonexistent:/sbin/nologin

You did not indicate how many other distros you have installed sans the
ports system, so the source of your problem is not readily decipherable.
In any case, you would have to remove all remnants of 'clamav' you have
all ready installed before attempting to use the ports system to install
its version. If you want to maintain your system in a non-conventional
manner, then it is your burden to make it operate correctly. You could
contact "ga...@freebsd.org". the port maintainer for his assistance. He
will probably be of more assistance than anyone here regarding clamav &
FreeBSD.

Then again, "You pays your money (and you takes your chances)."
