If my friends sent viruses to me, I'd soon cease to call them friends. :) What is the email server software? What version? What version of ClamAV are you using? Who configured your server, and where are all the configuration files? Do you understand them? Your email server is configured badly and needs to be fixed. If your email server was configured that way when it was supplied to you then I suggest that you find a different supplier, who better understands the problems that users of the Internet face. Replying to spam in any way is bad. Email sender addresses in spam and malicious emails are usually forged, but if it is not a forged address it might be one of the spammer's harvesting addresses and you will be helping the spammer by telling him that the email address to which he sent the spam is a real and active one. He will then almost certainly sell it to other spammers. You are also telling him that there is an active and badly configured mailserver open for abuse, and it might be used in a denial of service attack on a third party. If, when it finds unwanted mail, your email server replies to the claimed sender to report it, then it can actually make the mallicious mail problem worse because it is probably sending the mail to some innocent third party who may have no idea what your mail server is talking about. This is called 'backscatter'. If you are operating a server which is sending backscatter then you are responsible, even if you didn't configure the server yourself. If you are responsible for backscatter you can find your server listed on blacklists dedicated to that purpose. Please take the time to learn about your server, and how to operate it securely and responsibly, before you cause more nuisance on the Internet. -- 73, Ged. _______________________________________________ Help us build a comprehensive ClamAV guide: visit http://wiki.clamav.net http://www.clamav.net/support/ml
