Hi,
realtime proxy virus scanning is heavy by nature,
but your described machine shouldnt have any problems
in cpu etc for hundreds of users
( if i doesnt any other heavy jobs parallel )
the real question is what antivirus application
do you use with squid
as there are many
i.e SCAVR HAVP
SquidClamAv, Squidwall
etc
some of them have performance issuses
or need detailed config i.e dont scant jpgs etc
i had best results with
http://c-icap.sourceforge.net/
and clam beating others in performance
without special performance tuning for squid
after all questions related should go to the squid mail list
