I have been meaning to write about it and the post from Derek Currie
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
and the posts it has generated on the subject is very welcome indeed.

One of the causes that Mac malware is not in the clamAV database has been
identified by Derek C:

"This most likely is because Clamav is not a
member of the group of commercial Mac anti-malware providers who
share definitions as new malware is discovered. This is extremely
unfortunate. But it gets worse."

But I think there is an additional cause and that is the complacency of the
Mac community. Since the platform has been safe from serious malware threats
Macintosh users are impervious to the problems faced by, say, Windows users.

We started using applemac in 1992 (LC II) and in all these years have never
encountered a virus though we had and still have on Classic OS the well
trusted Gatekeeper and the Disinfectant. I regret very much that Gatekeeper
was not supported by Apple when the applemac community could have a full
fledged firewall for the price of one macintosh and perhaps with a little
support the Disinfectant could have been developed to deal with macro
viruses.

In any case, I believe, mac users should come out of their self imposed
complacence and should be encouraged to upload the threats that they find to
clamAV database and that to happen Macintosh clamAV users should spread the
word on all Macintosh forums that they have access to.

Cheers
