This comes up quote a bit on the List. A few scripts have been published to deal with it, check the archives for things about watchdogs. FWIW I've had freshclam running on two servers for several years and I've never seen this happen, although I did see freshclam bring one of them down several times in the early days. I think it just ran out of memory, it only has 256kB.
