Never mind: it works now! (I had applied the patches in the 'work' dir and then remade. Apparently that doesn't work. Applying it to the original clamav .gz, however, did).
I gotta say, though, perhaps the single-most worry I have with clamav is never knowing whether or not the next version will compile/work again. It's always a gamble.
