 From the machine where I originally noticed the problem:

bash-3.00# uname -a
SunOS my_hostname 5.10 Generic_118855-36 i86pc i386 i86pc
bash-3.00# which ggrep
/usr/sfw/bin/ggrep
bash-3.00#

I didn't install it. Sun must have. But I would agree that older machines are 
unlikely to have it.
