That was my conclusion (rightly or wrongly).

This is made more complex for us by the fact that freshclam builds new
directories and files with permissions which don't work for us. (I took one
server offline after it choked, and prevented another from running
freshclam.) Then I sorted out the first-mentioned server after it finally
successfully finished a freshclam update, and prevented it from running
freshclam again. (Freshclam *updates* files and directories without hurting
our permissions--I think.)

Freshclam on our third server, meanwhile, gave up on getting the incremental
daily, and did get a daily.cvd (tossing out daily.inc)--it did manage
main.inc, and I fixed those permissions.

I'm now using that third server as a "canary" which will--through our normal
monitors--let me know when freshclam again substitutes daily.inc (with
bad-for-us permissions) for daily.cvd (which seems to happen on the next
update to daily, whenever that comes). The third server is not handling
mail except for the monitor messages--the other two are not running
freshclam.

It was an interesting late afternoon, but seems not to have lost any mail
here.
