Looks like the database is damaged, try running freshclam before starting
clamd.

Thanks. I don't know exactly how CVD extraction works, but it looks like it
was a too-full HDD problem. I found some Postfix errors that had to do
with space. The HDD wasn't "full", but it apparently was too close for
comfort. I later noted Squirrelmail wasn't working either. I deleted 10 GB
of a redundant photo backup, and now all three described problems have gone
away. Clamav restarted without the error and is working perfectly! - John
