Sorry René it took me so long to answer.
First I usually read the manual and I did it here too.
The linux world and the unix command line system is far from being my
second language i.e. it looks like marshian language to me quite often
probably because I didn't use it much yet. And also the manual pages
go straight to the thing so that when one lacks some background (like
me) it is hard to understand what a command (and the options) do(es).
Anyway I tried your proposition and it did not do it either.
I solved my problem by installing Claws-mail.
It is possible to import mailbox type folders (and transform them to
maildir type) as well as the other way around.
What I discovered this way is that thunderbird (at least the version I
had installed) never really erase the messages. They are kind of hiden.
Also when you move them through different folders they are stored in
multiple copies which can amount to quite a lot a disk space.
This is true for the junk too. So with a good spam filter I didn't care
much about that junk since it was deleted directly.
And until recently I did not pay much attention to viruses since under
linux ...
That is how I ended up keeping 44 viruses in my thunderbird folders
without knowing it. clamav could only "see" one but it is not
possible to remove them since they are not accessible (I did not find
a way to access them anyway).
I don't know if such hiden viruses can be "reactivated" by some kind
of malware, but I switched to Claws-mail with spamassassin and clamav
and it's being great !
