This proves the guess made earlier in regards to DP's problem on the same platform. Team, on my Debian systems, I have /usr/share/aclocal/iconv.m4 (part of gettext) that defines the macro AM_ICONV. It should be a simple matter to add the macro to configure.in and rebuild the autotools.
