Here's another clue below. It's freshclam that is removing the daily.inc dir. And when this dir doesn't exist, freshclam-milter exits. This seems wrong, shouldn't freshclam perhaps download to a new temporary directory and then upon successful download then install? Isn't it better to have a (slightly) out of date database rather than none at all?
