Actually, as per another reply, I was able to locate in the /usr/lib/MailScanner/clamav-wrapper file the lines where it invoked clamscan. I was able to change this to clamdscan and knocked the server load down from around 8 to 1.5, although I'm not really sure that clamdscan is doing anything. The "test" messages I sent through with attached executables got cleaned by MailScanner itself, not by the clamdscan.
Can you tell that I'm not entirely sure how this all works? If load is the problem, it is not from clamscan which should not even be running... do you see it in the process list?
