Actually, as per another reply, I was able to locate in the
/usr/lib/MailScanner/clamav-wrapper file
the lines where it invoked clamscan. I was able to change this to clamdscan
and knocked the
server load down from around 8 to 1.5, although I'm not really sure that
clamdscan is doing anything.
The "test" messages I sent through with attached executables got cleaned by
MailScanner itself,
not by the clamdscan.

Can you tell that I'm not entirely sure how this all works?

MailScanner doesn't use clamscan or clamdscan, it uses a perl module.

If load is the problem, it is not from clamscan which should not even be
running... do you see it in the process list?  On the other hand MS can be
tunned to the load, and usually Spamassassin is the one that causes the load
when used without care (i.e. too many tests).
