Yesterday seemed that clamav-milter blocked sendmail and we couldn't send
any mails.
I receive the next message:
Sep 4 17:41:36 server clamav-milter[24326]: hit max-children limit (5 >=
5): waiting for some to exit
After restartarting milter everything worked fine.
Can someone explain what happened? What should I prevent?
We use RH-9 with the last clamd version

I do think that there is too much of a danger of denial of service attacks
or mail failure due to the milter crashing if you scan your mail during
the SMTP phase. I have regularly seen ISPs that can't accept mail because
of this problem.
I'm pulling in a million messages/week with a rejection rate of about
70% for all reasons. I scan incoming and outgoing for spam and virus in
real time and don't have a problem and haven't had a problem like this.
I'm running Sendmail 8.13.8 with J-Chkmail 1.9 as a milter for spam,
behavior analysis, Bayesian filtering, SURBL, unsafe attachment
filtering, and for invoking ClamAV. I have 3 Sun dual Sparc E-250
systems and two Ultra 2's each running the MTA and one of the 3 E250s
runs J-Chkmail and ClamAV. It's pretty robust. The only time it ever
sagged under load is when our marketing people sent out 300,000
newsletters and all the some 30,000 vacation notifications, full mail
boxes, unknown user messages all slapped back within minutes - it was
pretty busy for a time, but it kept going. Any of the E250's systems can
also handle the spam/virus filtering if load sharing is needed and takes
seconds to configure via DNS RR. Total cost: $3500.
If it's a problem it's not universal.
