Giving someone an answer outright limits their requirement to think about strange problems, ensuring that they understand why what when and how will make sure they not only are empowered to help themselves, but also that they are empowered to help others (and boy will I never forget when I was first able to provide meaningful assistance to others) So you are right, don't ridicule, but also, unless the question demands a 1 line syntax type answer, provide help, assistance and answers where required.
