Just be sure you've completely removed all the pieces of the previous ClamAV version - you cannot depend on the package installer to do any of this for you. This would include the executables, libraries, man pages, docs, config files, header files, init startup files, etc. And shut down any running clam processes before you start. I'd also examine the crontabs to see if you have any clam processes included there. You should probably get some good hardcopy or online documentation that discusses your version of Linux and the various package installation tools you are likely to use.
