I'm not sure, but I think you meant clamd, instead of spamd. if that is the case ...

I think the big advantage comes in two reasons.. one, you don't have the startup/teardown time of starting all those procmail processes. (if you run procmail, which is reason 1.5) number two, you can actually put clamd on a different host.. Say you have 5 front end email servers for a really, really big company, you can setup a 6th box to do virus checking for all of the mail servers.

Number 1 really probably matters mainly if you have lots and lots of email..

Spamd is spamassassin, and its probably a very good idea to run both, but virus is critical..

Course, I'm just a end user, i'm sure one of the developers could give you lots and lots of juicy details... ;)
