Subject: [Clamav-users] AV relay + MX backup question

I have a ASSP antivirus relay setup
(assp.sourceforge.net<http://assp.sourceforge.net>)
that's currently filtering spam and viruses for one domain. I'd like for it
to do the same for other domains, but would like to make sure if (for
whatever reason) the relay is down, mail still gets through. I am also
setting up an MX backup through DNS Made Easy for like $8/year.

My question: what would my DNS would look like? Something like this, I
suppose:

primary: mail relay (which forwards to my MTA)
secondary: directly to the MTA
tertiary: to the MX backup

If you announce your MTA in the MX-records, it will get spammed, spammers doesn't respect MX priorities, as they know that the backup mx'es often doesn't have the same level of spamfiltering as the primary MX.

If you can monitor the primary mx, and only open access to the backup mx when the primary is down, you might be able to keep the spam down.

Why do you need a MX-backup anyway? If the primary MX is down, are you able to read the mail from the MX? If not, why do you care if the mail is waiting on the backup-mx or the senders mailserver waiting for the primary to come up. With a backup-mx they think the mail is delivered; without mx-backup they can see it is still in the queue.

Leif

Thanks in advance,
Roger
