Thanks, Tim and aCaB. The problem was that the scan directory was owned by root. Once I did a:
chown Debian-exim:Debian-exim /var/spool/exim4/scan everything started working. Thanks again! -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus.
