The Fink team make many custom modifcations to makefiles and even software source before adding things to their distribution packages. They are much more than just a neat organisation of software. There is much work that goes on behind the scenes to fix many of the issues that OSX has with software and compiling in general.

Again, everything compiled via Fink lives in /sw, so you can always give it a go without breaking anything important. See for yourself.

That won´t work at all! The SOURCE distribution has to be compiled. That
we still have the compile problem with Tiger !
A binary distribution on fink would be needed!

Fink puts everything in a /sw directory, so it shouldn't interfere with
anything you've already installed elsewhere.
