It depends for what purpose you want to use it, in my case i want to sort out my whole collection with over 15000 different viruses and trojans, so in this case it would be a great help to identify all variants, i just love ClamAV for the great work on adware and spyware identification like how many different part of a program it can make the difference, and has a lot better result on such stuff than many high price products.Depending on your tool set:
sigtool -l |sort |uniq -c |sort -rn |less will show you the details. I think it's not a big deal - unique names are not necessarily needed. A virus with 1000 variants means a lot of -xxx's and that makes for a pretty messy report.
I'd sure hate to see the genus, phyla, species, breed, gender and mutant form of every damn virus show up.
