Depending on your tool set:

sigtool -l |sort |uniq -c |sort -rn |less will show you the details. I
think it's not a big deal - unique names are not necessarily needed. A
virus with 1000 variants means a lot of -xxx's and that makes for a pretty
messy report.

I'd sure hate to see the genus, phyla, species, breed, gender and mutant
form of every damn virus show up.
It depends for what purpose you want to use it, in my case i want to sort out my whole collection with over 15000 different viruses and trojans, so in this case it would be a great help to identify all variants, i just love ClamAV for the great work on adware and spyware identification like how many different part of a program it can make the difference, and has a lot better result on such stuff than many high price products.
