If it truly does check a few times and then stops doing it, that's weird. Do you use LogVerbose? I do, so I don't know what it does or doesn't log when you don't.
Perhaps someone else can chip in with that.
I do know that the bit about the '-d' option needing '--checks' is false; it doesn't. At least not here; it will run fine without it and do exactly what you would expect: read freshclam.conf and follow the 'Checks' directive in there, or run at 12 checks a day (de default) if it isn't defined.
