Just wanted to post an update... After building RPMs from the latest snapshot, updating my zlib to 1.2.2 and deleting the clam database and forcing freshclam to redownload it, we had the same problem. In fact, the lastest snapshot would die after five minutes at most. It was the clamav-milter process that was dying, the clamd process was stable. When it died, the SMTP connection would open and just hand, no welcome banner.
My solution? I switched to clamassassin on the delivery phase of the message just like our spamassassin install. We have been up and running for over 12 hours without a hiccup at all in the SMTP process, clamd is still stable and things are resolved. I plan to edit procmail so that if there is no clamav header it get's returned to the queue, to ensure messages are being scanned. Have a great day! Thanks for another great open source product!
