Subject pretty much says it.
for reference, both .75 and .80 were built with the following:

#!/bin/sh
./configure \
--with-gnu-ld \
--with-user=qscand \
--with-group=qscand \
--enable-bigstack \
--disable-clamuko

thanks for the responses, everyone. i was able to run ktrace on clamd during an interval that it was 'running' but non-responsive - not using any cpu time, even though messages were being delivered to the server. this is all it produced:

 24038 clamd    RET   poll 0
 24038 clamd    CALL  gettimeofday(0x2811db18,0)
 24038 clamd    RET   gettimeofday 0
 24038 clamd    CALL  clock_gettime(0,0xbfaedfa8)
 24038 clamd    RET   clock_gettime 0
 24038 clamd    CALL  poll(0x8064000,0xb,0)
 24038 clamd    RET   poll 0
 24038 clamd    CALL  poll(0x8064000,0xc,0x2710)

i'm clueless as to what it means.
