Well, no one else seems to know either :) The only thing I might suggest is updating to the latest GNU Make (3.80), and seeing if that makes any difference. I have had some weird build errors, (not with Clam, BTW), with some software with different versions of Make in the past. The other question, regarding disable-dns, is to just make sure you use Freshclam once hourly, instead of more frequently, as it uses the original method of contacting the database mirrors.
