Hi again,Thank you so much for your response, but boy, now I am confused. Are you saying I should be using amavis not clamav? This is the 2nd response with an amavis url in it.
Gillian, the 2 pieces of software complement each other - Amavis-new is a 'conduit' which passes stuff out to something like ClamAV to check. ClamAV is purely a viral detection device & passes it's results back to something like Amavis which is configured by the sysadmin to do whatever it needs to.
On my system, I use ClamAV to scan incoming mail on a site-wide basis & this is the process:
1 - Mail comes in, intercepted by the MTA Postfix, which looks & if the sender is on an RBL used by my server, the connection is rejected.
2 - If not, the mail is handed off to Amavis-New, which in turn passes it firstly to Spam Assassin - if the mail is Spam according to Spam Assassin, if it's been tagged as Spam, Spam Assasisn then hands it back to Amavis-new
3 - Amavis-New dumps it or rejects, depending on the settings, if not it's handed off to
4 - ClamAV for a viral scan. Whatever the case, the mail is then handed back to Amavis-new, which sees if ClamAV marked it as infected - if so, it gets dumped or quarantined
5 - Finally, if it passes through the sieve above (i.e. points 1-4), it gets delivered to it's final destination.
However, you may wish to use only a scanning function, but that should let you know what you might want to do with ClamAV. Hope this helps.
