On-access scanning means that files are being scanned each time you touch them, i.e. perform copy, open, save operations. H+BDV wrote a kernel module to provide this functionality, the so called dazuko (German for DAteiZUgriffsKOntrolle). It interacts with their AvGuard and thus files are virus checked each time they are being accessed.
