Thinking that maybe there is a permission problem somewhere, I commented out
TCPAddr (127.0.0.1) and TCPPort (3310) from /etc/clamav.conf and used the
LocalSocket option (/var/run/clamav/clamd.sock). Now email goes through
just fine, and quickly.

Can someone help me explain this behavior? I apologize if this should be
directed to the clamassassin list .

Currently clamassassin only works with clamd using the LocalSocket option. I recommend using the standard socket /tmp/clamd as clamassassin will automatically use clamd if you use that one. I'm sorry that the clamassassin documentation is not completely clear about that. By the way, the clamassasin mailing lists and my contact info are on the clamassassin web page at http://drivel.com/clamassassin/ if there are any future clamassassin problems.
