Here's what my web host had to say:

A couple of notes on this. The documentation says it is for linux "workstations". It may not matter but typically a linux workstation would have various software libraries and software packages installed that a linx server does not. The structure between the two is somewhat different as they are geared towards different functions.

Also - I noticed that you seem to need root permissions to install this which you wouldnt have on our machines.

I think based upon a preliminary look at this that it would not install "out of box" on our machines. Its very likely that it couldbe modified to work but that may take a considerable amount of expertise to accomplish. Your welcome to install pretty much anything that is not seen as a security issue on your domain but I am fairly certain that this particular package would take some modification for you to get it running.

Can ClamAV be installed on a shared web host account? I have command-line access but not root access. The web host is running Red Hat Linux. I only need the command-line scanner (is there a way to install only that and freshclam?).

~/bin
~/tmp
~/var

./configure takes options for all of these (and /etc), so you can
install wherever you need to. I think you'll have to do some hacks to
make it look for lclamav in ~/lib, but it's doable (set environment
variables in ~/.profile, for instance).
