Yes, but it will be slower. Depends on SelfCheck interval (at least this is true for older versions).
Strangely enough, NotifyClamd is NOT on the default clamav.conf on latest CVS snapshot (not even "present but commented out" like LogTime).
I guess it's on by default now.
NotifyClamd is part of freshclam.conf
Aaah , my bad :) Still, every SelfCheck seconds clamd checks the db files. If it has changed, clamd reloads it.
