Antony, Thanks for your reply. I suspect it is Comcast : dig @ns3.clamav.net database.clamav.net works fine. dig @ns10.attbi.com database.clamav.net ends with a connection timed out error. Both commands run from the same box with different results depending on which dns server is queried. Now all I have to do is to convince "Comatose" to "fix" their DNS servers. Better trying to bring peace to the middle east.
