I think the initial "From email date" header (without colon) is missing. I had exactly the same problem with the testmail included in the clamdmail package. Strangely, the variant "cat testmail | clamscan --mbox -" works without this header, while "clamscan --mbox testmail" and the two clamdscan-variants don't.
