Good points, but I assume that posting to the list is only allowed from approved addresses, we dont want just anybody to be able to update the database.
Hammering the servers with requests shouldn't be a problem, then we just have to implement a feature so freshclam uses the servers in ramdom order to even the load.

I think the idea of virusdb list is great. I really do but I was wondering about a couple of points:
1. Supposing that a significant part of clamav users subscribe to the virusdb list, won't the update servers be overflowed with lots of update requests all arriving in a small period of time? Each users setting their own updates had the beneficial colateral effect of distributing these update requests during the day.
2. Who will be able to post to this list? I wonder what might happen if everybody start sending test messages to the list. Again, I fear, the servers might get overloaded. I am not worried about the "spurious" checks my system might do. I doubt they would have a significant impact in my bandwidth. But I am not sure about which impact it might have in the upload servers.
Am I being overcautious?
Anyway, I wanted to share these thoughts with you.
