Wash,

I still don't understand why you're using the gcc that runs in Linux
compatibility mode. On FreeBSD you should have gcc2.95 in /usr/bin/gcc, you
may also have gcc3 in /usr/local/bin/gcc3, depending on the packages you
installed.
Check:

a) What value do you have in the CC environment variable when running
configure?
b) What is the output of "which gcc"? That'll check that your PATH environment
variable is picking up the right one.
c) What value do you have in the PATH environment variable.

I have just updated my FreeBSD from 4.7 to 4.8. It came with bzip2 support
(though I had to select it at install time). I haven't had the chance to try
the latest clam on it, and I'm about to travel to India for a couple of weeks
on business so I may not be able to help you until the start of May now :-(
