I made the changes you suggested in crontab, but it did not like "root" in the command so I tried it without root but with everything else and got the same error. I have created a work-around using "freshclam --stdout | logger -p local6.info" in my crontab and "local6.* /var/log/clam-update.log" in /etc/syslog.conf. It works well enough, but I would like to know why I can't get freshclam to work with the -l param.
Sorry about sending the last message twice. I've been cc'ing clam-users and the message didn't show up there so I thought I messed up and the message just didn't go out.

I know I could be anal but could you please have your crontab entry like this: 0 6,8 * * * root /usr/local/bin/freshclam --quiet -c 4 -l /var/log/clam-update.log
I have merged it into one. I don't know why you wanna run it at 6 and at 8, but in cron
you can specify multiple hours like 6,8,10...n. My practice is also that I always specify the user I want the cron ran as.
(Hope I didn't send this to you twice)
You did. Why did you? :)
