Building the idx files is a necessary step. What it can be avoided is to
rebuild them every time Cinelerra opens a project.
In fact after closing your project, by default Cinelerra keeps only 100
index files. To increase the number of index files kept go to
"Settings→Preferences→Interface - Index Files" and enter a bigger value
in the "Number of index files to keep" field. It shouldn't be smaller
than the number of your source files. Of course this way you are using
more disk space.

I've encountered this problem quite often: in the Timeline the cursor is
sweeping the same area again and again, progressing extremely slow, with
no audio. I noticed it happens every time the audio device is busy (e.g.
an application involving audio is open, in my case usually Kino or
Firefox). Is this your case too?
