I have been waiting quite a while for a potential capable mobile workstation for useable HDV editing with Cinelerra on Linux. Finally, in my opinion the new, "general" HP Compaq 8710w mobile workstations does feature promising specs for this purpose. Before buying, I hope to get some feedback and viewpoints:

HP Compaq 8710w comes available in three preconfigured models:

1) KE191EA 8710w T9500/NvidiaFX3600/17"WUXGA WVA/1x2GB/200GB(7200rpm)/Blue Ray/802.11a-b-g-n/BT/TPM/FPR/Vista Business Downgrade/3-3-0

2) GC124EA 8710w T7700/NvidiaFX1600/17"WUXGA WVA/1x2GB/120GB(7200rpm)/DVD+-RW/802.11a-b-g-n/BT/TPM/FPR/Vista Business/3-3-0

3) GC125EA 8710w T7700/NvidiaFX1600/17"WUXGA WVA/1x2GB/120GB(7200rpm)/DVD+-RW/802.11a-b-g-n/BT/TPM/FPR/XP Pro/3-3-0

Optional FreeDOS and Linux:
Dependent on countries, FreeDOS is optional available as a special dealer configuration. I've started to search about this, to see if I can avoid to pay the Windows Vista tax. On Oct. 05, 2007 a previous, now lower end 8710w model was also certified with Novell Suse Linux Enterprise 10 (SLED 10) http://developer.novell.com/yes/91889.htm

Even that the new high-end model 1) above has another, more powerful CPU, graphics and Blu-ray burner, I think the previous certification still has much relevance to make this new model 1) a relative safe selection for both SLED10/openSUSE and Linux in general. One user has reported successful use with Ubuntu.

Previous on this list, I think that a Xeon 3.0 GHz CPU on stationary workstations has been recommended to manage useable speed for HDV editing with Cinelerra.

Therefore, what about the mobile

Intel Core 2 Duo CPUs, T9500 vs. T7700 above?
* T9500: 2.60 GHz, 6 MB L2 cache, 800 MHz FSB
* T7700: 2.40 GHz, 4 MB L2 cache, 800 MHz FSB

Graphics
NVIDIA Quadro FX 1600M vs. FX 3600M graphics with 512 MB dedicated video memory?
