terje, re your workflow: the concurrency of codecs (capturing from DV
and then to MPEG) is not ideal but if that is the only way to capture
then i that is how it is.
I'll try give an overview and sum up a little:
1. The source for my "digitizing project" is 120 hours S-video footage
over 15 years since 1992 (now I'm recording everything new in HDV)
2. So far I have converted and captured the first 250GB (19 hours) to DV
on a DV/HDV HDD recorder that also can be mounted via firewire to a
Linux workstation.
What I plan to do further:
3. Backup/archieve the digitized "raw DV source" on primarly two media
types:
a) 200/400 GB LTO2 tape cartridge (available in a month on my new office
server)
b) 50 GB BD-R DL optical Blu-ray disks (waiting for a 4x external
firewire model)
This backup/archieve format and media are offline (as shown I've dropped
DV tapes)
4. To also have an easy, online accessible playback format for my HDTV,
I wish to utilize the BD player and disk capacity by transcoding the DV
source to MPEG-2 at "highest possibly SD-video quality"
5. I plan also to extract and edit some of this "DV source" in
Cinelerra, and render this to DVD video and BD video quality as in 4.
Hope this give a better overview of what I wish to do .....
Cheers,
Terje
