Sounds like you are tring to use the opengl driver. Try using X11 or X11-xv
in preferances>playback. What kind of videocard are you using ? If nvidia
are you using nvidia drivers or stock NV driver?

Some other things that may cause this:
In preferances>playback check off "play every frame"
In preferances>playback check to see what audio driver you are using. Select
ALSA and the tab "stop playback locks up"
