i had the same problem some time ago,
and some others had, too. so this has been discussed a bit.

apparently, audio can be stretched in time to match,
 with corresponding slight change in frequencies.
i don't remember the name of the effect. i did not use it.

however video is at fixed frame rate,
 so stretching would require resampling (and thus probably result
 in some loss of quality, but i'm not quite sure).

in my project, i chose the same solution that you suggest.
if you have alternating video from 2 cameras, it is no problem
 to cut the clips where they are not seen.

if the cameras have audio tracks as well, and if precision is important,
 you can align the sound waveforms to achive exact synchronization.
look out for cracks or piano tones, they give clearly visible signals.

if your extra audio track is of better quality than camera audio,
 you can still use those for visual alignment and then mute them
 before rendering, so only the best sound will be heard.
