From my experience this is a sign that cinelerra doesn't recognise the codec. You may already know this but in case you don't: avi is not a codec it is a container format. It can contain different codecs - some of which cinelerra can read and some which it can't. When it can't read the codec I think it assumes that the data is some sort of raw audio.
